At a time in New York radio when overnight hours are largely given over to satellite radio for budget purposes it is good to remember a time when someone did a unique thing in those hours. During my high school days it was considered cool to stay up late and catch the first minutes of Long John Nebel on WNBC and later WMCA. Like his WOR overnight predecessor Jean Shepherd Nebel was also not part of the mainstream of life which made him good company to those of us in the same situation. Donald Bain definitely captures that aspect of Long John and shows how he was able to sell products and the oddest of program concepts to a largely cynical generation of listeners.
