Heartfelt

"Lola's Luck" and "The Church of Cheese" (2010, also by Carol Miller) together create a beautifully written portrait of a people who live by wits, emotion, and intuition; whose deepest enjoyment comes from giving, sharing, and celebrating in close community; and their friend and observer, a bright, perceptive American woman who "went native" after falling in love with a married gypsy man. The Church of Cheese provides more cultural and ethnographic context for these California Machvaia gypsies, but the stories continue and make this work all the richer. The Church of Cheese: Gypsy Ritual in the American Heyday

Lola is a GREAT read!

What an incredible story! I had thought it might be a dry academic book, but that is so not the case. One learns and gets a true understanding of Gypsies in America while totally engrossed in Carol Miller's amazing personal adventure. There's drama, humor, suspense and romance. It's a wonderfully written book. I wouldn't doubt that this is soon to be a movie.

Fascinating

I really enjoyed this engrossing book. This is a world and lifestyle so completely different than mine; it was hard to put down. A reader will find rich detail, humor, romance, and bitter sweet memories

I loved Lola!

I really loved this book! It is a very enjoyable read, as well as an opportunity to expand one's appreciation for a different way of life. It is such an intimate account of the pleasure and (sometimes) pain of participating in a culture in many ways so unlike our own. It made me more aware of real human needs that are poorly met in our society and increased my appreciation of the presence of diversity in our lives.
