For more than twenty tears, introductory logic students have relied on this text to provide clear lessons in logic as well as practical applications of the discipline. Baum emphasizes formal logic and uses such elements of popular culture as cartoons and advertisements to illustrate technical concepts. The text addresses all the basic concepts of logic, including informal analysis of statements and arguments, Aristotelian logic, propositional logic, quantificational logic, enumerative induction, the scientific method, probability, informal fallacies, definitions, and applied logic.
Several years ago I asked students to select a logic book out of about five or six. They selected this one. I suspect it was because there were more cartoons in it but it is certainly adequate. It is easier than Copi and Hurley but more comprehensive than Salmon and others. But there are some mistakes that ought to be corrected. This book needs a 5th edition. For example, p. 165 looks like it has been changed from edition 3 without correcting everything on the page. Now it is worse. In describing the form of a syllogism all four examples are incorrect.
a better book than Copi & Cohen's standard textbook

This book teaches logic to people through light atmosphere, not alway very serious,as the Copi & Cohen's book did. However, this popular form doen't maim its completeness and rigor at all. I think, people always tend to use logic in real world. This is what Baum did. Enjoy it.
