Twenty year old Melody is hiding out at her sister's house in California along with her six month old son, Jake. She feels safe, keeping her son away from his father until a private detective showed up at her sister's house. She immediately packs up again and moves back to her home town of Clovis, New Mexico, where her mother and grandmother push her to leave town again and go to Logan, New Mexico and her grandmother's house at Ute Lake. Melody is aware that the Clovis Police are looking for her and Jake so when a handsome, young deputy takes an interest in her she runs from him. When Deputy Ryan Baylor sees a beautiful blond and her baby coming out of the store, he notices the fear in her eyes as she looks around her and wants to know what or who she's afraid of. When she drives away from the store Ryan decides to follow her, but before he gets a chance his brother, the Sheriff calls him and he loses the blond. The fates must have been against him finding her because everything seems to stop his investigation. Melody doesn't help by hiding from Ryan, afraid the deputy will take her baby from her. Will he find her in time to save her, and will he be able to get her to trust him long enough to get to know her? Not only is her fear against him, but the 4th of July is coming and the lake is chaotic during the holiday.
