Lodge Magic recounts the moving stories of real people who have been pushed to the margins based on stereotypes about people with mental illness. Despite their individual diagnoses, these people have become largely self-sufficient, and solid members of their communities. On the human dimension, this is goodness. In addition, the support offered in the lodge environment means that the funds provided by the various government agencies support people who are turning around and paying taxes back in to the system to help themselves and others. On the economic dimension, this is also goodness. The book is worth reading to see how one agency has crafted what is clearly a win-win outcome for all of us.

The book nudges us to understand more sensitively, the struggles, the gifts, and the journeys of each person. It's the healthy mission, and the love of each person in the lodges that benefits all who enter these homes of refuge.

The work of Tasks Unlimited has been familiar to me through a family member who has worked with this agency for years, but reading the stories of the individuals who have gained independence and self respect through participation in the lodges was enlightening. Truly, the philosophy and structure of the lodges has worked magic in the lives of so many against whom society still discriminates.
