Captures the Essence of Animals Who Get a Second Chance in Life

You'll never read a better book about what it means for an animal to be given a second chance in life. While some of us do the easy work of taking in the occasional homeless hen or duck, author Kathleen M. Schurman and husband David open wide the gates of their home and hearts to four horses destined for the slaughterhouse. This wildly imaginative and frequently poetic book tells the tale from the point of view of other animals on the farm, including rescued donkey Locket, a Muscovy duck named Duck, crows, more horses, and imperious parrot Polonius. Kathleen's talent for capturing the essence of the critters who populate "The Long Road Home" is partly genius and partly clairvoyance. Not only does she convincingly channel the emotional life of her animals, but she also does a lovely job portraying the beleaguered humans. Adults as well as children will be enthralled by this book. - Bob Tarte, author of Enslaved by Ducks and Fowl Weather

The Tao of Locket

Rarely has an author captured the essence and voice of so many interesting animals! If you've ever looked into the eyes of a horse or bird, ever watched a crow land on your fence, or ever listened to the laughter of a duck and wondered, "Yea, but are they REALLY saying that?" This book answers with a resounding YES! Ms. Schurman gives the reader occasion to laugh and cry on each page. Her depth of understanding of the connection between animals is remarkable. Her wit and dialogue will have you finishing this book without ever putting it down! It's as much for the 64 year old gentleman farmer as it is for the 13 year old teenage girl falling in love with a pony for the very fisrt time. Read it. You'll not only understand the world of horses better, you'll understand yourself a whole lot better!
