Review of Location Scouting and Management Handbook : Television, Film and Still Photography

I also bought this book back in the '90's and lent it to an associate who never returned it! The person I loaned it to knew very little of location scouting and location management and since I never got the book back I can only assume they found it very useful... Perhaps this novice level of reader was the target audience; the book does give some of the basic 'mechanics' and duties expected of a location professional but does not go into the many intracies of diplomacy and, as an example, being able to purvey to a lay property owner in a succinct way what you are doing, what production will be doing, what is expected of them and what is in it for them. One does a lot of real-time thinking on one's feet when there is a show in production, perhaps there is no way to convey in print the 'best way' to do any single location service? Location services are an arcane and to many, obscure arm of the production process. As a professional, one of the most frequent questions I am asked (even by many production professionals) upon introduction is "what exactly do you guys do?" Additionally, this book was written, as I recall, from the viewpoint of a suburban location scout, urban scouting in a large city such as New York, especially in Manhattan, has its own unique set of challenges which were not really addressed. At the time this book was written independent film making was at a different level of development as an industry and being a large part of the total volume of film making nowadays I think some of its unique challenges are due some page space which I dont recall being given their due in the book. Most of my location scouting nowadays is done digitally and presentations are done online. This book was written at a time when digital imaging was still in an infancy stage for the status quo and does not address many aspects of scouting in a digital world. I would repeat that I think book is a valuable tool for the novice but on a more advanced level I would have to say that this tome may be due for some updates and expansion on its theme.
