Ljiljana, jabuko moja is a novel about a brave woman from Belgrade, Ljiljana, who decides to leave Serbia and seek happiness in Canada following the death of her fiance in a car accident, renouncing her established career as an actress. Another important factor greatly influences Ljiljana's decision to leave: the lack of love from her mentally unstable mother since her early childhood. Her decision to separate herself from the burdens of the past leads her to seek a happier future in the West. The fate of this heroine is similar to the heavy burden so many immigrants carry on their shoulders, painting a realistic picture of the life of every young immigrant woman starting a new life in a new world: young and lonely and where the past constantly casts its reflection on the present.
