"Lizard Brain" is a coming-of-age and tragic, yet comedic memoir about my first love. His name was Diggy, and he told me on our first date that his was bipolar. I was 21 years old at the time, and had only a superficial understanding of the illness. Diggy said that it spiked when he did drugs, but mostly he talked about it as a fortuitous condition for him. That night Diggy revealed too little to educate me, but enough to captivate me. I never thought I could save him, but I thought I could at least help him. My aspirations were a well-intentioned, but delusional cycle, and I lost myself in the pursuit. I fought so hard to keep him together that I fell into my own madness along the way.
