Thought provoking, fun, inventive -- what a creative idea for a book! If you're having a small group gathering, ask each person to try & pick a single word to describe themselves & watch what happens!
what one word defines you?
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 20 years ago
Living Word by Laura and William Gentry is an art project and a people project -- asking a variety of people of a variety of ages, races, occupations, and lifestyles -- what ONE word most defines them. Art is primarily about communication. This art project involves not only the original artists -- but it expands to include everyone who ever participates. The book includes black and white portraits of a wide range of people -- from the age of one to their 90s -- all wearing a plain white t-shirt of the word they feel best defines them. Brief text next to each portrait gives a sense of that individual. Look into the eyes of some fellow human beings and see a glimpse of who they are. This could be a wonderful project for middle school students; a discussion point for writing groups; a probing question to ask a friend or family member.

Family Fun!

The Living Word book is great fun and a easy read! My husband and I both ordered a tee shirt after a much lively discussion as to what one word best discribes each of us. We plan to wear our tee shirts and take the book to our next family reunion and play the interactive word games. I feel it would be a great book to take on a family vacation, the book is so visual, all ages could participate in fun positive conversations and activities while driving or as a back up activity for a rainy day.
An inspired and inspiring project

This is a terrific book: It was a great idea, asking people to choose one word they would use to define themselves on their own terms -- and then printing t-shirts they can wear, that announce that word to the world. The book, at once a logical and fun extension of the the authors' "Living Word" project and a fascinating twist on black-and-white portrait photography, is an aesthetic delight and an inspiration to anyone interested in thinking about where we're each going, on our own unique and particular paths -- what makes us who we are, and what gifts we can bring to the world. Highly recommended.
