Living with a Secret

(Book #2 in the Why Me? Series)

Trapped Cassie Mullins is fed up with her parents, who think she can't be trusted to manage her diabetes. Just because she cheated on her diet and landed in the hospital. Just because she wants to be a normal kid. Only Aunt Liz seems to understand, and she urges Cassie to take a job as counselor at a camp for diabetic children. Camp Caribou seems like the perfect solution. Cassie's free and her parents think she's safe. There's only one problem: she's the only counselor who is diabetic. And she has decided to keep it a secret. It's not easy to conceal the truth. Cassie can't even tell Jason, the cute counselor who has become a special friend. Her world falls apart when her parents show up unexpectedly and reveal her secret. Cassie's furious and ashamed. And Jason feels betrayed that she hadn't told him. Suddenly, nothing seems to matter. Why be careful when nobody trusts her anyway? Cassie is about to learn the lesson of her life. About love, compassion, responsibility...and the real meaning of friendship and self-respect.

A good book, but...

It's nice to see a book with more up-to-date information about diabetes, since most books like this seem to have been written in the '80s. Most of the information in the book is accurate, except for one recurring problem. The numbers given for Cassie's blood sugar, even when she says it's under good control, are consistently higher than they should be. She says everything is okay when her sugar was over 200, and she says that it should normally be between 100-150. In actuality, blood sugar should be between 90-120. While 150 is acceptable, frequently being in that range would signal poor control. Anything over 180 is considered too high. It's a minor problem, and it's true that Cassie doesn't have the best control, but the range of 'good control' at least should be corrected in a future version. Even though it's not majorly important to the story line, it is a bit misleading, especially if someone were to read this book for information about diabetes. I give the book five stars because, other than that one problem, it is well written and fairly realistic, and all the other medical information is basically correct.

An Amazing Story

This book is an amazing story. It is about a 15 year old girl who has diabetes. After ending up in the hospital for writing false glucose numbers her parents baby her and treat her like she is little. She decided to work at a sleep-a-way camp for diebetic children where she meets this really cute guy, Jason. The only thing with Camp Caribou is that she is the only counselor who has diebetes and she intends to keep it a secret until her secret is revealed. All of ehr friends and Jason feel diapointed that she didn't trust them... If you like this book read- WHY ME? THE COURAGE TO LIVE, also by Debroah Kent.
