Well worth reading

Many books have been written about the job search process, mostly from an intellectual point of view. This is not one of them. It takes a totally different path, looking at job searching from a spiritual and holistic point of view. If your (ex-) employer offers the services of a job coach, take it. The person can, at minimum, point the job seeker in the right direction. One of the first things to do is to let go of any negative feelings toward your employer, then learn to accept yourself the way you are. The accompanying CD has several guided visualizations for assistance. Learn to trust the universe/the great spiral (or insert your preferred term). The job seeker needs to come up with answers to a number of questions about themselves. What do you do when you are not working? To what does your spirit call you? What is your internal guidance system telling you? Have you examined the patterns in your life? What is your passion? What if money were not an issue? Last but not least, who are you? The author has not ignored the more familiar parts of the job search process. She looks at the resume, the cover letter, networking, the interview, the job offer, and what to do once you are in your "dream" job. There are also those days when, for whatever reason, it is not working, and giving up looks tempting. The author spent many years in the corporate world, before turning to the holistic world, so she understands job searching. This very interesting book is helpful for those who have been laid off, and those who are thinking about a career change. Maybe some people just need to a different approach to find their passion. This is an excellent place to start.

Earning a Living Doing What you Love!

Reading Melanie Mulhall's book for the second time, I am struck again by her revelation that corporate "mentality" and a spiritual life are antithetical only when I indulge in my self-deceptive attachment to my cherished defense mechanisms such as need to control, denial or possessiveness. With the directness of her style, she reminds me that the enemy is as often inside as outside myself. She walks, no she dances me through discovering who I truly am using Native American ritual, astrology, breathing techniques and entrancing music by Douglas Spotted Eagle, to name but a few of her diverse array of techniques. Then she grounds me and has me write my resume, the ultimate task of marrying my real self to the demands of the work world and its competitiveness. If you are in a transition, I say that reading this book is a must!

A Sceptical Seeker

Initially, I was reluctant to buy another self-help how-to book, but Living The Dream came highly recommended. I perused it and found that it grabbed my interest with non-ordinary anecdotes that were powerful teaching tools. It changed the way I looked at my job/career search, helping me to see that how I approached job/career is also how I approach my life. (The enclosed CD forced me to question and reevaluate some of my basic assumptions leaving me better prepared to follow my career path.) Kudos to Melanie Mulhall for a job well done.

A Trusted Friend

Living the Dream has been a great guide to help me unearth all of those nagging issues that held me back....or rather, kept putting me in the same situations. It is a like a Trusted Friend that you can tell your darkest secrets to...and it continues to help you anyway! In fact, this book helps you admit what those dark sides are....and helps you let go of them. It is also insightful regarding the regular career stuff like resumes, cover letters, networking and interviewing, but that is just icing on the cake.
