We have a problem. Christ mandated us to "go and make disciples" (Matt. 28:19). The problem is, most Christians aren't comfortable doing that and, therefore, aren't. Statistics tell us that only 10% of Christians have the "gift" of evangelism. That means that only about 10% are comfortable sharing their faith with strangers. These people don't need an invitation to talk; they are quite comfortable broaching the subject of Christianity. I'm happy for them-jealous even But what about the remaining 90%? What about us? Well, we are generally silenced by fear.Fear is the number one reason Christians don't share their faith (and I'm not blaming them). Some Christians who do not have the gift of evangelism are afraid of being too aggressive or confrontational with non-Christians. Some are afraid of offending another person and being rejected. Still others are afraid that if they start talking about their faith, the non-Christian will ask questions that they can't answer, and they will be exposed as ignorant about the very thing they claim is the most important part of their lives. In any case, most Christians are afraid and, consequently, not involved in the Great Commission. No wonder church growth in America has been stagnant for the last few decades. This can't continue. Contemporary Christianity is like a giant ship running off-course. But what are we to do?Well, I think I have at least part of the solution-it's what I call the "Living Principles." These four simple principles can help any Christian-even those who don't have the gift of evangelism-to be intentional about sharing their faith in the course of their daily lives. In short, these principles can help you get in the game. And imagine what a difference it will make if just some of the 90% without the gift of evangelism started being as effective as the 10% with the gift. We might just turn this ship around after all.
