best no-nonsense approach

Many language books receive undeserved and inflated ratings because they have plenty of pretty pictures and write with exclamation points and funny little quips. This book is the most comprehensive and CONSCISE Japanese instruction book I have come across and I have been studying Japanese for two years. It teaches all concepts with the maximum clarity and the smallest use of your time and book pages. It just isn't a "cute" book. It does not try to disguise the fact that learning a language is hard work.

Japanese All the Way lives up to its title!

I have been attempting to learn Japanese for about six months. I have purchased several books on the subject, and looked at hundreds more. But I have now found the best available book for learning Japanese on your own: Living Language's "Japanese All the Way". The book presents 40 lessons, each on a different topic, such as "Job Hunting" or "At the Airport". Each lesson begins with a short conversation in Japanese (with an English translation following) illustrating the new concepts. The rest of the lesson is devoted to discussing those concepts in depth, with examples both from the conversation as well as new. After each lesson, there is a short quiz to test that you have learned the material well. Following each five lessons is a review quiz covering all the information you have learned. The only reason that this book receives a 9 instead of a perfect 10 is that it is, unfortunately, not perfect! There are several typographical errors in the book that can occasionally confuse a reader if they are not paying attention. However, because these mistakes are few and far between, I can recommend Japanese All the Way without reservations
