William Hordern is a theologian that I studied under at Garrett Theological on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Hordern has a way of writing as clearly as any book on theology I have ever read. His work is scholarly but at the same time written to be understood. Believe that I have every book that Hordern has written and have not found a bad one yet. Enjoyed this one very much. Any Hordern book is a great read. It is amazing how he can take you through difficult and complex issues, handle differing opinnions clearly and respectfully and yet show his own take on the issues. Read him! J. Mercy for Christians

Typically speaking, when I see a book in a Christian bookstore that has the word, "grace" in its title, I am concerned that it will simply be about flowers and puppies; lacking in substance. Hordern's "Living by Grace" transcends this type of book. It is a deeply encouraging work for those of us who long for the comfort of the Gospel. Hordern begins his book by talking about how young men in his seminary (where he was president) would relate their feelings of guilt to him in a personal counseling setting. He extrapolates this to the wider Christian church and explains that most of the church lives in a state of guilt. In order to counter the effects of such inner turmoil, Hordern writes directly to Christians covering eight seven topics from Justification to The Forgiveness of God to Liberation from sin. The first 40 pages are a bit slow, but the following pages are worth the effort. The reader encounters several deep good news passages which leave you meditating on Christ's forgiveness for you. It is a very Christ-centered work, although one might be challenged by some of Hordern's social applications. I have found this to be one of the best books on the subject of Grace and have purchased more than ten copies for friends
