Ralph Ballard, a solitary ex-athlete in his forties, receives a surreal phone call one morning. His brother and sister in law have died in a car crash.

Ralph's young nephew, Caspar, was in the car as well. But he survives the accident. Caspar is then placed into the guardianship of his uncle, who he barely knows. Ralph, in turn, has never had kids himself and knows nothing about children. Now he must raise a distraught orphan all by himself.
