It was a cold, rainy day in November 1861 when an orphan girl named Mary Alice Smith arrived on the Riley family's doorstep. Mrs. Riley took her in as a guest, but Mary Alice worked for her board and keep. "Allie" worked with all her heart-and imagination, too.
