A happy ending for Little Kit and the trained fleas

Little Kit is an orphan who survives by selling flowers until she is hired to help the shady Professor Malefetta, who runs a flea circus and thinks Kit is a boy. This story shows how hard life was for orphans and the poor in 19th century London, but the author keeps an upbeat tone and doesn't allow the depressing subject matter to take over the book. The watercolor illustrations are bright and cheery, and kids will identify with the kind-hearted, resourceful Kit and appreciate the help she gets from equally kind-hearted people along the way.
