Little Jeanne of France: A Tale of Two Worlds: The Journey of Little Jeanne

By Madeline Brandeis

"Little Jeanne of France" by Madeline Brandeis is a poignant narrative set against the backdrop of World War I, exploring themes of family, loss, and hope. The story begins with Madame Villard, a Parisian grandmother, who is overjoyed at the birth of her granddaughter, Margot. Unbeknownst to her, another granddaughter, Jeanne, is born in a war-torn village, the daughter of her son Paul, who is fighting at the front. After a tragic invasion, Jeanne's mother dies, leaving the infant in the care of an old peasant who promises to take her to Paris. However, the journey proves too arduous, and the peasant entrusts Jeanne to Suzanne Moreau, a lonely dressmaker. Suzanne, captivated by the child, decides to raise Jeanne as her own, keeping her true identity a secret. Years pass, and Jeanne grows up helping Suzanne in her children's clothing shop in Paris, known for her role as the "Little Model." Despite her success, Jeanne longs for the simple joys of childhood, like playing in the park. Meanwhile, Madame Villard continues her relentless search for her lost granddaughter, unaware that Jeanne is living in the same city. A chance encounter occurs when Madame Villard visits Suzanne's shop to buy a dress for Margot, but the connection remains undiscovered. The narrative weaves through the lives of these characters, highlighting the stark contrast between Jeanne's hardworking life and Margot's privileged upbringing. The story culminates in a moment of realization for Suzanne, who is tormented by her conscience and the knowledge of Jeanne's rightful place. The tale is a touching exploration of the bonds that tie families together, even amidst the chaos of war.
