It leads to a dead Indian and a surprise in her own background. Doreen Ralston (1917-2003) was a folk artist immersed in history and Indian lore. She was born in and lived most of her life in a very rural mountainous part of Virginia. As the tale unwinds, it reveals what it was like to grow up on an Appalachian farm in the 1920s. Her paintings illustrate the book and detail everyday life of that era. Doreen told her stories to the author who compiled them into this third grade level book. It intrigues adults and young children will comprehend it. Fifty percent of the profits from this book go to Doreen's favorite non-profit organizations.
