A Good Book

The story of Laura Ingalls' mother Caroline when she goes to a private school in the city and lives with her aunt and uncle. Quite a contrast the poverty and deprivation of her country life,Caroline goes on picnics, rides a carousel, goes to parties, and attends a fancy private school. Her uncle runs a printing press.

Best of the bunch

Country mouse meets city mouse. This is my favorite book of all the Little House prequels, showing the stark contrast between life on the frontier and life in Milwaukee, where Caroline's uncle's family enjoys modern conveniences that don't exist 2 generations later in the Rose books in Missouri. It shows Caroline's character, that she would spend the rest of her life farming after being exposed to all the city could offer. Her admiration of her aunt is great foreshadowing to Rose Wilder's admiration of her aunt Eliza Jane. This book compares well with Betsy in Spite of Herself, in Maud Hart Lovelace's Betsy-Tacy series, where the small-town Betsy spends Christmas in Milwaukee with Tib just after the turn of the 20th century.

College

Fifteen almost sixteen year old Caroline is going to the city to attend "Milwaukee Female College". While she's in the city, she stays with her Aunt and Uncle. Her Aunt takes her to her first restaurant. She gets turtle soup which she finds very well. If you don't like girl and boyfriends in books at all, you wouldn't like this book because she meets a boy named "James" who she likes a lot. I personally adored this book. I would definitely recommend this book because I read it three hours straight one day because I couldn't put it down. I finally stopped because my eyes burned. The age level for this book would probably be, nine years old to adult. Find out what happens next in Little City by the Lake.

good book

Little City by the lake is one of the best caroline books there is. Its about Caroline going to visit her aunt and uncle in Milwaukee and her going to a school were they teach young girls to grow into women, pretty much. Shes going there so she can fufill her dream of becoming a teacher. She learns that things are much different here in Milwaukee and while she misses her parents a lot she cant not have fun. She even meets a boy named James whose sister is a really big brat. Well anyways you buy this book and I promise you wont be sorry.

Best of the Little House Series

This is such an enjoyable read, definitely the best of the "Caroline years," and maybe even my favorite of the whole Little House series. Unlike many of the hard-time pioneering stories, this one takes a bit of a lighter turn as Caroline goes to live in the "big" city with her aunt and uncle. The city is filled with many new sights and "modern conveniences"--even indoor plumbing--and new experiences such as dances, restaurants, and an all-girls school where Caroline studies to be a teacher. I can't wait for another book in the series to be published, so I can see what happens next!
