Absolutely one of my most memorable books of childhood!
Published by Karyn E , 26 days ago
I discovered this book the Summer of 1958 when I was living in Norfolk, Virginia. Our school librarian created a summer book club, The Tom Sawyer Reading Club, and challenged us to color as many fence posts as we could during the summer. We would paint one fence post for each book we read. Our librarian's name was Lucy Stone and she was British and I absolutely adored her; she was a true inspiration.
In the course of my library explorations, I discovered Little Black Ant. It was not your typical nature book in that the little black head of the title was very much anthropomorphized and he told the story in the first person. He talked about his daily life, about keeping the ant hill clean and about feeding and caring for his Queen. Especially moving was his recounting of the day with the Queen was killed by an attacking ant tribe. At the age of 78, I was so happy to once again find a copy of this book. It engendered a love of animals, even small creatures, that is lasted my entire life.
