Listos

This is Mike Hiler's seventh published poetry book. While attending the University of Missouri (1962 - 66) he was inspired by the Universities resident poet John Neihardt who wrote "Black Elk Speaks" and "Cycle of the West," a metered odyssey of the American West. Mike was awed by the task Neihardt had set for himself, and inspired by his lively readings. Later, Robert Pen Warren's "Spoon River Anthology" likewise gave Mike a hint of the possibilities of examining the life and trials of ordinary people against a backdrop of the cosmic human experience with words through time. The four chapters of Listos integrate and contrast Mike's experiences and observations into Wilderness (Campfire Smoke), The social environment (In Praise), Studies of the concept and meaning of time (Capstone), and poetry theory (Listos).
