Lipper's Mills: A History: Starting Life Over In A Foreign Land

It was 170 years ago and over 4,000 miles away that a group of 112 people from the village of Langenholzhausen, Lippe-Detmold, Germany left for America. They were in search of better opportunities leaving poverty, political chaos, and religious persecution. Their intention was to join fellow emigrants from a nearby village and settle in Iowa. The journey would not go as planned; they did not make it to Iowa, but settled in Town Herman (then called Howard), Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. It took eleven weeks to get there, a trip that takes nine hours by air today. They experienced hardships, disappointments and tragedies along the way and after, but they persevered. Their common origin and Christian faith bound them together in mutual assistance to establish a settlement (Lipper's Mills), build a village (Franklin) and found a German college (Mission Haus) and seminary.
