Lincoln Logs

Lincoln Logs describes a town created by the logging industry at the end of the nineteenth century. It illustrates the establishment of the Town of Lincoln, New Hampshire, in the upper Pemigewasset Valley on the banks of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River located in the heart of the White Mountains. It is carved out of a dense, bucolic, virgin tract of unspoiled timberland. Within the book are real-life people of the era who intermingle with five generations of four fictional families suffering through numerous trials and tribulations, becoming deeply involved in interpersonal relationships, and taking an active role in America's wars from the War of 1812 to Vietnam. Close-knit families cope with the 1893 Depression; enter the twentieth century with new technology in communication and transportation; muddle through the Roaring Twenties, and survive the Great Depression of 1929. At the end of the book, snow skiing replaces the logging industry.

Great read for a regular visitor to the Lincoln/Woodstock area...

Our family owns a vacation condo in the Lincoln/Woodstock area at the Deer Park Resort, which now stands on the grounds of the old Deer Park Hotel - and like most of the grand hotels of it's era - was sadly destroyed by fire many years ago. I understand the old hotel was quite the establishment in it's day, and I was so pleased to see it mentioned many times in this book. It kind of brought it back to life in a way for me, even in a fictional sense. If you are a regular visitor to the area like I am - I highly recommend this book - after reading it, you will gain a new appreciation for the area, and afterwards, when you ride through the town of Lincoln, you will notice things (buildings streets, etc,) you never noticed before ;) It's an interesting read!

Review of Lincoln Logs-Historical Fiction by Jules Seletz

This book about the town of Lincoln, N.H. had me, a transplant to Lincoln, feeling very proud to be a citizen of this town. As I read about people I've known or known of, I felt extra proud. I found myself fighting back tears many times as I read this novel while on vacation, relaxing among family. As he described events that took place generations ago in places I've been in,on streets I've walked down, the author made the event actually happen to me. It was very powerful.
