From the time immemorial the rulers of India by realizing the importance of wetlands such as tanks have paid the attention to construct the tanks in rural areas. In the absence of perennial rivers and the underground water table at deeper depths due to reduced rainfall & over exploitation of ground water, the tanks play a significant role in the life of the rural population in parts of Karnataka.Tanks act as source of water being utilized for agriculture, drinking, groundwater recharge, recreational and domestic activities besides rituals. Hence, tanks in rural areas have become inseparable part of human life.The survival of domestic animals in rural areas depends on tanks and ponds.As a result of human interference they have been under enormous pressure which leads to change in the chemical quality of water and intern the biological composition which results in an imbalanced ecosystem, which decides the socioeconomic status of the rural people. Hence, it is an attempt to evaluate the limnological profile of such rural wetland ecosystem in the state of Karnataka by considering the water chemistry along with diversity, density and seasonality of phytoplankton with few remedial measures
