Tragically, Smudge was hit by a car, leaving Lilly heartbroken. But then Smudge miraculously reappears to Lilly one night, and they are reunited as lifelong companions. Smudge remains a constant presence in Lilly's life, even as she grows up, starts a family, and eventually passes away.

In the end, Smudge is waiting for Lilly on the other side, and they cross the rainbow bridge together, reunited forever.
