Lilly Pasley And the Muddy Waters

By David Wayne Kinsman

A Mystery That Strengthens Reading Comprehension
One of the goals of Lilly Pasley and the Muddy Waters is to help readers (age 10 and older) improve their reading comprehension while enjoying an engaging mystery. Reading comprehension is more than recognizing words on a page. It involves understanding what happens, remembering important details, identifying cause and effect, recognizing clues, drawing reasonable conclusions, and thinking about why characters make certain decisions.
A mystery is an excellent way to practice these skills. Readers must pay attention to details, connect information from different chapters, distinguish what is known from what is suspected, and consider how one event may influence another. Sometimes a small detail that appears unimportant at first becomes meaningful later in the investigation.
For this reason, the book includes chapter review questions designed to help readers think about what they have read. These questions encourage readers to recall important events, explain why something happened, recognize relationships between characters and events, and make reasonable inferences from the information presented.
The questions are intended to support readers at different stages of their learning journey, including students, independent readers, book clubs, and adults who want to strengthen their reading skills. Teachers, parents, tutors, and reading groups may also find the questions useful when discussing the story.

Lilly Pasley is 27 years old, a licensed private investigator in California who takes cases from insurance companies, attorneys, and ordinary people desperate for answers. Independent, observant, and stubborn when something doesn't add up, Lilly has learned that the truth is rarely as simple as the story someone tells. Her home is a silver Stream camper she pulls behind her 2022 Jeep Wrangler. The camper gives her freedom to travel wherever an investigation takes her, whether she's following a witness across the state or spending a week in a remote mountain town.
Her constant companion is Echo, an eight-year-old German shepherd and retired law-enforcement dog. Echo is disciplined, intelligent, and alert to changes in his surroundings. He is no longer working the streets, but his training and bond with Lilly make him a valuable companion when an investigation turns dangerous.
Lilly believes most mysteries begin with one small detail someone hopes nobody will notice. Her next case begins with a dead man, a river full of secrets, and a town that may be drinking poisoned water. At 2:17 a.m., an alarm sounded inside Prim Power's industrial control room. A technician named Daniel Mercer stared at the readings on his monitor. Something was wrong with the plant's wastewater containment system. The numbers weren't merely outside the normal range. They were climbing.
He checked the instruments again. Then he noticed something that made his stomach tighten. A chemical storage line had ruptured, and contaminated water was moving toward a drainage channel connected to the river. The same river that supplied the town's drinking water. Daniel reached for the telephone. Before he could make the call, the control-room door opened. Someone stood in the doorway. "You're not supposed to be here," the stranger said. Daniel turned. "I have to report this." "No, you don't." Daniel looked toward the emergency shutdown controls.
The stranger stepped closer. By sunrise, Daniel Mercer would be dead. And the official explanation would be that he had drowned in the river.
