Lightship of Ela'si

The Lightship of Ela'si is the fifth chapter in the Annals of Sol series, but is a standalone novel, and is set more than ten thousand years in the future. At this time humanity, Earth, and the Great Alliance they led are legend, their worlds separated from the rest of the galaxy by a Great Barrier erected just before they sacrificed themselves to save the Universe. In order to preserve some part of themselves they fashioned a race on a barren world in their home system in their image, and guided their civilization through an Oracle they fashioned. These people, known as the Si, have suddenly become embroiled in a civil war with dark origins. On the other side of the Barrier a violent race ascended to power and formed an empire called the Imperium, forcing other worlds to join and be subject to their rule. One of these races has openly challenged the Imperium, dooming their home world. In a desperate attempt to save it, a group of scientists and engineers steal a science vessel and begin a journey to try and locate any remnants of the human civilization beyond the Barrier to help them.
