Book Overview

Catherine Marshall's "Dark Night of the Soul"

While Catherine Marshall was known for her vulnerable and authentic writing about her faith in God, she concealed most of her anguish and desolation during this time of loss and heartbreak from her admirers...friends...even family. The most important relationship in her life -- the one with God her Father - was severely tested. Unanswered questions, confusion, and isolation pervaded her heart and mind.

Through the lens of Catherine and those who loved and supported her during this time, this sometimes raw and aching commentary on the life of a Christian in the darkest times explores some of the most difficult questions in the life of the Christian faith.

This compelling book traces Catherine's slow agonizing ascent from her spiritual valley. With excerpts from journals and taped interviews with Catherine and additional insights from family and friends, Light in My Darkest Night describes Catherine's journey from that dark night of the soul to an even stronger reliance on her God. . . and yes, to the dawn of hope and trust again.

Powerful is the Mysterious Work of God

This book is so candid, so open, so honest that it is a rarity. The death of her second grandchild caused Catherine Marshall to be shaken deeply in examining her beliefs and assumptions. She was a well-known Christian author at the time and thought she had heard from God that the child would be healed. Her friend heard what she thought was the opposite from God. Catherine confesses that she was wrong on other matters as well. In going through this dark, dark night of the soul, she examines herself and life in a deep way that far exceeds much of the superficiality taught today. "Our God is the sovereign Lord of life and death; our times and seasons are truly in His hands," she writes. This book is filled with mysteries of the spiritual arena. On the short life of her first grandchild, Peter Christopher, her son Peter observes, "For life is not to be measured in length of days, but rather in how well we fulfill out destiny. We believe that in two short weeks Peter Christopher has perfectly fulfilled his destiny and purpose." This book will touch you to the core of your being.

Not Actually Written by Catherine

Actually written by Marshall's 2nd husband, Leonard LeSourd, this book has a different "flavor" than other books penned by Catherine Marshall. Features entries from her own journals and published after her death in 1983, may actually be more soul-baring than if she'd written it. I would highly recommend for someone preparing for dark times. Could add to depression for someone currently feeling God has abandoned them, unless they can read 255 pages in one sitting and get to the happy conclusion.

Romans 8:28

This is a great story of how God does work all things out for our best, even if we don't understand at the time. A very easy book to read and somewhat of a biograhy of Marshall that really captures her emotions. Her husband took her journal entries and that of others to write this book, so we get to see exactly how she felt during her trials. It is a great book to see her learning how God works and watch him conform her to His image. Marshall really battles it out with God at times, but in the end, they both win. Very similar to Elliot's Passion & Purity in its style, content and outcome.
