To this very day, I still remember the mark upon their faces. It was a mark of betrayal, an event that escalated and went out of control, only to end with them giving up what they had spent most of their life protecting. For some, the consequences of that repetitious suffering were too much. Every drop of hope that remained within them was taken through the act of submission.
Was it their disloyalty that got me on edge, or the empathy that I was supposed to be feeling towards them? It wasn't like I knew them well, nor was it their choice. It was more to do with the comradeship and those words - Never Surrender. We were all in the same situation and, at some point, enduring the same persecution and suffering.
