Life's tough. When it gets nasty; get tougher! I stared into the dark. Far-off lights reflected, shimmered and danced on the roiling water. The river washed everything downstream while the lights sparkled in one place. It was all illusion. Somewhere, deep below, hidden within the weeds and muck, buried, lurked other things. Things that wouldn't, couldn't, be washed away. Unseen. Unknown. Waiting. Life had moved on, but, like the lights on the water, I was stuck in one place. And I dread the horrid things buried within. Hard-boiled? or only poached in Tabasco? Either way, private detective Rachel Cord pursues multiple threads seeking a runaway teen and why gay performers are being beaten at Miss Kitty's Kathouse Kabaret. The threads twist and bind becoming a tight cord of lost love, child pornography, rape, murder, and near insanity.
I really enjoyed Rachel and the other characters. the story was well written, beliveable and true to life and up to date with the issues. I had to keep reading to see what would happen next, it turly is a page turning story. I wished i could have been the one to take out archer and calvin for what they did. It was nice to read a lesbian/gay novel. I hope we get to see more of rachel cord.

Loved this rather wacky and very original crime book. Very funny, with a slight dark underbelly. Reminded me of Sam Millar's Karl Kane series of books, especially Bloodstorm. Well worth buying and highly recommended.
Ooooh, What an interesting story.

This is an extremely well written and crafted novel and Conary knows how to paint his characters so that they are vivid and come to life. They are real and that draws you into the story. You are there. See the action. Feel the emotions. It is like you are a silent character in the story itself. I sometimes forgot that Rachel could not hear me! Rachel is a well endowed tough PI that takes no quarters from anyone, male or female regardless of their persuasion. She has a solid foundation but yet holds herself responsible for any misfortune that occurs on what she considers her watch. She does have one kink in her armor; She thinks she is the Lone Ranger and doesn't realize that Tonto is not there. This is a well crafted plot and if you have a sharp detective mind you may pick up a clue here or there. Maybe not! Recommended reading for those who want to be entertained with a suspenseful mystery.
Five Star Review for a Five Star Book

Men look at her at chest level. Private Det Rachel Cord hates how big her breasts are. They are heavy, huge, the bra strap cuts into her shoulders her back pain is horrible due to them. She dreams of cutting them down to a normal size so men will stop staring and back pain will stop. Why would anyone want a big bust. This is a great book, wonderful story, beautifully written. I could not put it down. I laughed out loud 4 times in the first 3 pages. My husband came in wondering what was SO funny. I started reading it, and picked it up every chance i got, until i had finished it over a 24 hour period. The story had such a great quality of the reader never knowing what was going to happen next. You really feel for Rachel what a great girl.

There are some very nasty characters in this book, glad Rachel was on the case. A page turner, have read it twice now, can't wait to see what is in store for Rachel next.
