As a decorated WWI war hero, Lum had no intention of taking any nonsense from his grandsons. However, his grandsons had made it their goal to test his authority. The brothers goofed on Lum at every opportunity and performed many humorous pranks until Lum discovered a way to embarrass the boys into submission, or so he thought. He was known for his lengthy rants and tirades, filled with inappropriate name calling and insults. Lum was often referred to as rude, crude, and socially unacceptable.
