Product Description

A wealthy, uptight Wall Street stockbroker in the late 1800s runs his household with an iron fist, much to the amusement of his family and staff. These legendary tales, first written by Clarence Day, Jr, for the New Yorker Magazine, were developed into Life With Father, the longest running non-musical play in Broadway history. This Hollywood adaptation resulted in a faithful and delightful retelling, starring William Powell, James Lydon, Irene Dunn and Elizabeth Taylor. Due to a dispute with the Day estate, the film was withdrawn from circulation after its initial run, and only resurfaced again many years later. It is now available for all to enjoy!

“She was sitting on father’s pants.”

It is late-nineteenth-century New York, and the family is well regulated by father, Clarence Day, Sr. (William Powell); Well, maybe. We have the fun of watching a heavy-handed father attempt to influence his family. Unfortunately, for him, he has a secret exposed and learns a strange economic logic from his wife, Vinnie Day (Irene Dunne). Meanwhile, his number one son, Clarence Day, Jr. (Jimmy Lydon), while learning about women (Elizabeth Taylor), finds that his father's hand-me-down suit has a will of its own. This was based on a play, the 1939 Broadway production also called “Life with Father” that ran for over seven years (ran for 3,224 performances). It would be nice to have seen it to see what was adjusted for the movie.
