The purpose of the book is to provide an examination of life and death. While we are familiar with both life from our experience and death from our observation, the author looks at life and death more circumspectly and objectively. We perceive our lives as a series of changes, events, and experiences with a start and an eventual end. We observe and learn about the lives of various lifeforms including those of fellow humans as a story of which we have a more limited knowledge. The book examines life and death from a scientific viewpoint. It attempts to understand what can be learned from an understanding of the history of life, examination of various lifeforms including single and multicellular lifeforms, the activities of these lifeforms, and the stages of life. It also examines aging and associated senescence at the level of the cell, tissue, and organism. The book discusses the causes of death, process of death, effects of death, and what happens after death. Also, it examines how to deal with our impermanence and that of others.
