February 22, 1951. The Prattville Progress paper headlines read, MURDER AT MOUNTAIN CREEK. Young Sudie Hubert was found brutally murdered yesterday in her home in the Mountain Creek community. There were three logical suspects: her husband, Dawson Hubert; her aunt Stella, a woman folks called peculiar; or perhaps a drifter looking for food or work. The year was 1989, some thirty-eight years after the murder of Sudie Hubert. For both family and friends, life after murder had been difficult to overcome. In fact, the Hubert family thought they were finally free from the gruesome memories and terrifying nightmares. However, when other pregnant women began to be murdered in much the same way, family and police were both confused and angry. A massive manhunt throughout the region turned up nothing but dead bodies. The only conclusion the police, sheriff's department, and state troopers had come to was-there were definitely two assailants.
