Book Overview

Meet Sam, a tiny mouse with a massive love for books, who lives inside a busy public library.

By showing young readers that anyone with an idea can become an author, Library Mouse has spent decades inspiring classrooms, libraries, and kids around the world to write, illustrate, and share their own unique stories.

Every night, after the head librarian turns off the lights and locks the doors, Sam leaves his cozy home behind the children's reference wall. He spends his hours devouring everything from ghost stories and culinary guides to epic mysteries. One night, inspired by the thousands of voices on the shelves, Sam decides it's time to create his own book.

Using small scraps of paper, his teeth to sharpen pencils, and his own visual imagination, Sam writes and illustrates Squeak A Mouse's Life. He leaves his miniature masterpiece tucked among the real library books for a young human student to find the next day. It becomes an instant neighborhood sensation, sparking a massive mystery: Who is this secret author?

When the librarian leaves a note asking the mysterious writer to host a "Meet the Author Day," Sam must figure out a clever way to answer her request without revealing himself. Daniel Kirk's warm, textured gouache illustrations bring this beloved classic to life.

The Library Mouse series is perfect for classroom read-alouds, library lovers, and young writers who dream of creating their own books:

Really adorable!

Loved the story, kept the kids entertained

A Mouse for the Ages!

I'm not sure who enjoys this book more: me or my 4.5 year old daughter!! The illustrations of Sam are adorable as can be, and his creativity and passion are contagious. On the 4th or 5th reading, I noticed Daniel Kirk's little "trick" in the daytime illustrations which I will keep a secret however will encourage you and your little ones to discover! I could not recommend this lovely book more highly! A must for every library.

A read aloud and for instruction!

This is a great read aloud book for young children who are or about to experience using the library or who are ready to write their own stories. Teachers who are beginning to teach writing in the primary grades could use this book for their students as an incentive to write stories.

A true favorite!

I purchased this book for my two and a half year old son about a month ago. We read this together every weekend. It is so funny because he memorizes the pages and we take turns reading to each other. We shopped at a local flea market last week, one vendor had a stuffed toy mouse and my son looked at me and said, "Is that the Library Mouse?" It was so funny. This is an excellent book that encourages kids to write books of their own. I wish I could show you the ones my son has put together.

Awesome Book!

My little boy is four and he loves this book. He likes the story and the pictures. The Library Mouse encourages the children in the library to write their own little books. My little boy wanted to do it, too! He wrote his first little book the next day!
