In 1822, the colony of Liberia was founded by a private American philanthropic society, the Society for the Colonization of the Free People of Color of the United States, as a settlement for freed black slaves from the diaspora. In 1847, the Commonwealth of Liberia became the independent Republic of Libera. establishing a tripartite government (Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative). The settlers mimicked their existence in the US; ten of Liberia's first presidents were American-born, and its constitution, form of government, flag, capital city, counties, and islands were historically linked to America. The Republican Party of Liberia led the country for its first twenty-two years from 1848 to 1870 and again for six years from 1872 to 1878. In 1878, Hon. Anthony W. Gardner of the True Whig Party was inaugurated as the eighth President of Liberia. After that, Liberia became a one-party nation because the True Whig Party led the country until a coup in 1980. Starting in 1989, Liberia became engulfed in internal conflicts until 2003. In 2005, the country entered its democracy stage.
