My 10 year old and I loved reading this book. There were enough cultural references to illuminate the experience of someone learning a second language or being an immigrant. Even though there were some clique behaviors the writer kept it positive and empowering. Nice character development and also supporting characters that we came to enjoy. It provided great descriptive visuals and made for quick nightly reading together. Humor and something for either gender, as our protagonist spends a bit of time getting to know a boy in her grade. Gave examples of different yet both loving families. Mention of parental separation/divorce that opens up good conversation of you'd like to use it as a prompt. Again, this too is handled nicely by the author. We read the English edition and it helped us learn some words en Espagnol
