The Quebec Roxane describes to her best friend Sarah in these thirteen letters a territory fast taking on new shapes. Its geographical space extends from Montreal through the bucolic islands of the Saint Lawrence as far as New York; its cultural space is dominated by literary modernism and feminism. Most significantly, Roxane's map of artistic practices is given against a backdrop of the power relationships which sustain them: the tensions between small and large cultures, the inequalities of Quebec and English Canada, the subtle conflicts which mark the continued subordination of women in a supposedly emancipated society.
