In 1960 when Jon C. Halter entered Syracuse University as a freshman, he began writing to his parents at their home in Watertown, N.Y. His letters continued with increasing regularity through graduate school and training for and service in the Peace Corps in Venezuela, where he met and married his wife, Corina. His letter writing continued virtually every day to his wife during a four month separation shortly following their marriage due to problems with her visa application. These letters reflect a changing America as seen through the eyes of a young idealist who, at the end of the decade, found himself happily married and the father of a new son, beginning a career in magazine journalism that would eventually span 37 years, before his retirement in 2007.
