Steve and Nancy Elzinga volunteered in 1974 with Mennonite Central Committee, the relief arm of the Mennonite Church of North America, and spent thirty months in the village of Garissa, Kenya. Steve worked as an agricultural advisor to the Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture and Nancy worked with the Garissa Girls Secondary School and later with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Development as a social worker. During their time in Kenya, Nancy wrote over ninety letters to her parents and Steve kept a journal. In one of Steve's last entries, he wrote: "It has been a difficult, sad, lonely, exciting, peaceful and happy experience." This book contains all of those emotions as Steve and Nancy share their experiences of living in a remote village in Northern Kenya.
