The letters were written by the wife of the Dutch consul in Tallinn, Estonia during the years 1917 - 1926. They are eye witness accounts of many of the historical events during the first seven years of Estonia as an independent country. They also describe the daily life, the social life, and the culture of Estonia during that period, and they contain occasional flashes of humor. The author, Elisabeth van den Bosch - de Jongh also writes about her family life and her volunteer activities on behalf of refugees.
