This book is a testament of a black man's determination and persistence in an environment where most do not survive. Gene Carter became involved with a gang when he was 14 years old. This ruined his life for many years. However, he survived and he wants to tell others about it. He has something that many of us may not believe we have under such grueling circumstances...stamina. After the traumatic death of a close friend, who was killed in front of him, he knew he did not want to continue the life he had chosen but he only fell deeper into the addictions of gambling and alcoholism which he thought at the time would soothe the hurt of this loss. Eventually he grew tired of the monotony of imprisonment. He knew he wanted more. He knew he wanted to share his experiences to help others going down the same path. He had a strong desire to tell others how to avoid the mistakes, the toxic relationships and the stringent prison rules he so detested. Although these experiences were more than 40 years ago, his heart and soul will always bear the scars. Time has not changed the prison system or those who will be incarcerated after him. His thoughts are always with those who came after him. He decided to share his lessons-learned and his ideas of how to change the system and what it took to change him into the man he is today. He is now a proud black man who asks forgiveness for those things he did to others. He has become the leader God wanted him to be.
