The story of Hanukkah began approximately two hundred years before Jesus was born. The Bible consists of two sections: (1) The Old Testament, which was written before Jesus' birth and includes prophecy of the coming Savior, and (2) The New Testament, which opens with the birth of Jesus, who was the fulfillment of the prophecy. However, there were also about four hundred years that occurred in between the Old and New Testaments, where God's people were trusting in what had been promised to them, waiting hopefully on their Messiah. Within the timeline of those four hundred years of waiting, we find the story of the very first Hanukkah. The Jewish people have now been remembering this miracle for over two thousand years. In John 10:22, we learn that Jesus Himself, being Jewish, took the time to remember and celebrate the miracle of Hanukkah as well: "Then came the Festival of Dedication (that is, Hanukkah) at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon's Colonnade." John 10:22 There are many Jewish feasts and festivals established throughout the Old Testament. Because the festival of Hanukkah did not come to be until after the Old Testament was complete, the first portion of the Bible doesn't tell us quite as much about this festival as it does some of the others. The New Testament, however, lets us know that observing it was important to Jesus, which is more than enough of a reason for me to believe it should be important to us as well. Until now, you may have thought that Hanukkah was strictly a Jewish holiday, but as we take time to celebrate together over the next eight days, you'll learn that the Festival of Lights has quite a bit to teach us about the Light of the World , Jesus Christ. Let There Be Light: An Eight-Day Christian Study on Hanukkah: "The Festival of Lights" will take you on an eight day journey of learning about the Light of the World, while rededicating your life and the Christmas season back to the Lord. Grab your copy, a menorah, and some candles, and join us this Hanukkah season! *Menorah and candles not included.
