A visit to a prominent New York plastic surgeon with her daughter leads Kerry McGrath, a New Jersey municipal court judge and former district attorney, on a quest to find a killer, before a man she had once helped convict of murder dies for a crime he did not commit.
"Kerry's throat tightened. I know you, she thought. But from where? She swallowed, her mouth suddenly went dry. That face - I've seen her before. Once the woman had left, Kerry went over to the receptionist and explained that she thought she might know the lady who just came out of the doctor's office. Who was she? The name Barbara Tompkins, however, meant nothing to her. She must have been mistaken. Still, when she sat down again, an overwhelming sense of déjá vu filled her mind. The effect was so chilling, she actually shivered." Kerry McGrath, a divorced, determined prosecutor, is drawn into a web of injustice when she enters the office of Plastic Surgeon Charles Smith with her daughter, Robin. In this office she notices the face of a woman - a dead woman - walking out of the office, but the name doesn't track. Dr. Charles Smith is giving his dead daughter's face to other women. What kind of sick form of grief is this? Or rather, could this be grief? Kerry finds herself taking a detour from her other work to look back ten years ago to the "Sweetheart Murder" case. Suzanne Reardon, a radiant beauty, had been found strangled till her eyes popped out in her house with sweetheart roses scattered over her. Her husband, the most likely culprit, pled innocent but was found guilty and was now serving a life sentence in jail. But was there a miscarriage of justice? Will Kerry put her career and even the lives of herself and her daughter in jeopardy to free a man who might have been wrongly convicted of murder? Clark, the named and acclaimed Queen of Suspense, creates an irresistible rubics cube of characters and different plots. All of her books drag you into the story. When you think you've found the villain after meeting each character, at the end the most unexpected person turns out to be the culprit. This is an entrancing story of love and hate, redemption and revenge, truth and deception, and friendship and enemies. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a story with multiple plots with a climax that pulls everything together for an amazing and unexpected conclusion.

A Sweetheart of a Book

Mary Higgins Clark writes another page turner for her faithful readers. Kerry McGrath, an astute prosecutor and divorced mother, joins the list of Clark's famous heroines as she takes mystery lovers on a ride through this multi-tiered suspenseful story. McGrath deals with plastic surgeon Dr. Smith, who recreates the beautiful face of his murdered daughter on other patients, mob figure Jimmy White, her ex-husband and mob attorney Bob Kinellen, antique expert and thief Jason Arnott, and powerful politicians. They all become neatly tied in the end to the murdered Suzanne Rearden. The young prosecutor juggles motherhood that deals with fear for the safety of her ten-year old daughter, and of course attracts the attention of fellow attorney Geoff Dorso who represents the convicted murderer Skip Rearden. Allusion to the song "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" in the title and the book is ironic because it represents anything but love for the murdered sweetheart. All the same, this sweetheart of a book will keep you burning the midnight oils.

I recently read this, and I could not put it down! It was extremely gripping and very exciting. As a resident the area of Bergen County where the book takes place, it was also a lot of fun to read about my home. It's kind of exciting to think that people in California are reading about your area! The plot centers around Kerry McGrath, whose daughter, Robin, must go to plastic surgeon Charles Smith after a car accident. This leads to Kerry's reopening of a ten-year-old murder case. Her investigation is helped by a man named Geoff Dorso, the lawyer of the convicted in that case. It's a truly thrilling read. With elements of suspense, romance and humor, this book is perfect for any fan of mysteries! Or just any Bergen County resident. :0)
