Let God Write Your Life Story: The Devoted Life: A Manual

By Rev. Joseph Madison

The Sovereignty of God Over the Individual Life
To begin this transition, one must first confront the most difficult truth in the life of the disciple: the illusion of the autonomous self. We often operate under the subconscious assumption that our lives are our own property, that we are the primary architects of our schedules, our ambitions, and our reactions. We speak of "giving God control" as if we possess a finite supply of sovereignty to parcel out to Him, much like a donor writing a check from a personal account.
However, the scriptures demand a more radical, unsettling departure from this way of thinking. The sovereignty of God is not an invitation to partnership; it is an absolute reality of ownership. As stated in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "You are not your own; you were bought at a price." This is the foundational disruption. It is not a request for consultation, but a recognition of a pre-existing reality. The tension you feel-the friction between your desire to steer the course of your day and the quiet, persistent pull of divine leading-is the evidence of your residual attachment to self-rule.
