I bought this book because one of the stories was written by the outstanding Jane Rule. 28 stories from a satisfying assortment of authors including the terrific - Dorothy Allison, Ann Allen Shockley Judith McDaniel Audre Lorde, Jewelle Gomez, Judy Grahn Katherine Sturtevant Diana Rivers Jan Clausen There is also a comprehensive introduction by the editor, author biographies and a bibliography which is invaluable (I wish other anthologies would offer). From the back of the book - `Themes as varied as motherhood, old age, Southern life, sexual relationships, work, illness, growing up, racism, family bonds and friendships are explored. The mosaic of lesbian lived is reflected in the different racial, ethnic, class and regional identities of both characters and writers.'

The twenty-eight stories in this 1980 anthology include writers whose names are today familiar to most readers: Dorothy Allison, Audre Lorde, Jewelle Gomez, Elizabeth Lynn, Jane Rule, etc. But those names were not well known when Elly Bulkin created this incredibly valuable book. As wonderful as most of the stories are, and they really are wonderful, the introduction Bulkin wrote (27 pages long)is worth the price of the book. It is a brilliant work of scholarly recovery, literary history, and the very best kind of analysis.
