Leopard Gecko Care for Beginners: Enclosure, Heating, Feeding, and Handling for a Happy First Reptile

By Richard Leonard Lorke

Your first reptile, set up right from day one.

A leopard gecko is one of the easiest reptiles to keep well, and one of the easiest to keep badly without realizing it. Most problems beginners run into come from a handful of setup mistakes: a heat mat without a thermostat, loose sand under a young gecko, a single hide, or insects that were never dusted with calcium. This book walks you through a safe, calm setup step by step, so your gecko comes home to an enclosure that already works.

Inside you will find:
- Enclosure size, lid, and the right spot in your home
- Heat from below: an under-tank heat mat on a thermostat, and why a heat rock has no place in the tank
- Warm-end and cool-end temperatures, measured at the floor surface where the gecko actually lies
- Safe and unsafe substrates, with a clear warning about loose sand for young geckos
- A humid hide that makes shedding easy
- Insect feeding by age: which insects, what size, and how often
- Calcium and vitamin powders without guesswork
- A slow taming plan for a shy gecko, with safe handling rules for children
- What is normal during shedding and after tail loss
- Daily, weekly, and monthly routines, plus the most common beginner mistakes and how to put them right

Every chapter ends with a clear note on when to involve a reptile veterinarian. At the back you will find a one-page quick reference with every target number, a shopping and setup checklist, a two-page care log, and a glossary.

Written for first-time owners and families who want a healthy, relaxed gecko and a routine that fits into everyday life.
