Lenin's Kisses/?? (Chinese Edition) [Chinese]

By 閻連科

This is a Chinese rural allegory imbued with utopian narrative and a carnival of revolutionary language. Shouhuo Village is a little-known settlement where all the villagers are born with disabilities. In order to develop tourism, they accumulate capital to build a "Lenin Memorial Hall" on Soul Mountain, intending to buy Lenin's remains from distant Russia and have them interred on Chinese soil, thereby hoping to realize the Chinese peasants' dream of paradise. Over a hundred disabled people-deaf, mute, blind, lame, paralyzed-form a troupe of acrobatic performers: a man with a severed leg does the long jump, a one-eyed woman threads a needle, a deaf man sets off firecrackers, a blind man identifies objects by sound, a paralyzed daughter-in-law can embroider, and a child with paralysis walks with bottles fitted over his feet... They tour from place to place giving performances, creating a nationwide sensation for a time. The novel juxtaposes the real and the fictional, blends the present with history, and interweaves reality with nightmare-bizarre and grotesque, both true and illusory. From the famine years of the Great Leap Forward steelmaking to the Reform and Opening Up era centered on economic development, Yan Lianke, with extraordinary and grotesque imagination and incomparable coldness and profundity, depicts the absurdity and confusion of a northern village within the political landscape of the Republic's first fifty years, writing down his interpretation and reflections.
